Ashden

Ashden nurtures climate action rooted in local communities: boosting proven, popular solutions in the UK and the Global South. This creates better lives today and a safer future.

Does a climate revolution start with the privileged and powerful? Or in our high streets, homes and schools? The charity backs affordable clean energy for Africa’s villages and refugee settlements – and protects UK classrooms from scorching heatwaves. It also supports thriving tropical forests and urban parks, green homes that cut bills and emissions, and much more. Ashden always powers solutions led by frontline organisations: from small businesses and entrepreneurs to community groups.

Ashden helps Indigenous People and local communities safeguard tropical forests around the world. By boosting locally-led forest protection, we support the defence of more than 1 million hectares of threatened territory.

Backing local organisations is key to our work. They hold deep knowledge and expertise, as well as unique links with those on the frontline of the climate crisis.
Our approach includes helping forest communities make a living in a sustainable way: whether through farming and beekeeping, or eco-tourism. Because forests are only truly protected when people and nature thrive together.

Let’s Go Zero is Ashden’s campaign for all UK schools, colleges and nurseries to be zero carbon.

The campaign has brought more than 9,000 schools free support, guidance and opportunities: helping them to cut energy use and generate clean power on-site, tackle waste and transform their food and transport. It’s also nurtured green spaces, and supported adaptation for a changing climate.

Let’s Go Zero offers schools and trusts tailored guidance from Climate Action Advisors. This helps them monitor their carbon impact, create plans for change, find funding and deliver green projects and upgrades.

Transforming Humanitarian Energy Access

Worldwide, 120 million people have been forcibly displaced from their home. 94% of those living in refugee settlements have no meaningful access to electricity, and 81% rely on firewood or charcoal for cooking – which puts their health at risk.

With access to clean and affordable energy, displaced people can raise their incomes and enjoy a better quality of life. With this in mind, we give grants and other backing to refugee-led energy initiatives in Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia. By supporting local enterprises and organisations, we’re doing more than tackle energy poverty – we’re fuelling local economies too.
